'Grand Traverse' is a hybrid hazelnut developed by Cecil Farris in Michigan and first described in 1989, from a cross of the Turkish tree hazel hybrid 'Faroka' with a European hazelnut, making it about 75% Corylus avellana and 25% Turkish tree hazel (C. colurna). Nuts are round, relatively thin-shelled and flavorful, about 5/8 to 3/4 inch across, with clear kernels of about 1.3 g and roughly 40% kernel. Nuts mature in September. Resistant to Eastern Filbert Blight and hardy to zone 5. Can be grown as a single-stem tree or a suckering bush, reaching about 12 to 15 feet. Needs a compatible pollinizer such as 'The Beast'.
